Senior School students started the week by focusing on important PSHE topics (Personal, Social and Health Education) and team-building activities. It was an engaging day, involving thought-provoking and relevant topics. The impact of the misuse of social media was a key theme explored, as this continues to be an issue facing young people and children today.
Social media has undeniably revolutionised the way we communicate; it offers unprecedented opportunities for connection, self-expression and learning. However, when misused, the impact on young people is concerning and even dangerous. The School has just advised on the spread of unregulated WhatsApp groups, where seemingly young people and children (as young as Year 2) are added. The content and themes discussed on these WhatsApp groups are alarming and we have shared some guidance on how to monitor and protect children from such groups.
There is significant research on the risks and ramifications of the misuse of social media: the repercussions of excessive use, cyberbullying, exposure to harmful content, exploitation, and the impact on self-confidence and self-esteem. This article, from the Child Mind Institute, provides context to the issue and some useful advice. We encourage all parents and students to continue to report any issues directly to the School as we do take these very seriously. We are committed to working collaboratively to support our students navigate these issues; it was pleasing to see our Year 12 students supporting these workshops this week and proving to be excellent role models for our younger ones.
PSHE Day
This week, Senior School enjoyed Expect Respect PSHE day. In the morning, we explored themes such as conflict resolution and the impact of social media. Ms Stephenson led an engaging and inspiring talk about love, kindness and care within our community. In the afternoon, Year 6 pupils joined the Senior School students to take part in a House competition, where all Houses participated in team-building activities led by our Year 12 students, who were excellent role models. Well done to the students who were recognised for their efforts during the day and congratulations to House Water for gaining the most House points of the day.
Swing Band
Last weekend, the BISC Swing Band had their first public performance at the Walk of Cairo. They wowed the audience with a 40-minute set of traditional jazz classics. We are very proud of the band and their achievements!
U14 CISSA Football Tournament
Last weekend, BISC hosted the Under 14 CISSA Football tournament. Our boys' and girls' teams put on a fantastic display of talent and sportsmanship; battling it out against other schools in the competition, and finishing in 5th and 4th places respectively. More photos here.

Last term, House Earth hosted an E-sports FIFA tournament open to Years 7-11, which showcased House Earth's impressive organisation skills and their dedication to building a strong school community.

Year 12 Theory of Knowledge Exhibition
The BISC community is invited to this year’s IBDP Theory of Knowledge Exhibition, which will be held on Sunday 19th May, from 15:45, in the IB Common Room and IB Study Room.
Theory of Knowledge is one of the core components of the IB Diploma Programme and it encourages us to reflect on the nature of knowledge. This is an event where the students will exhibit objects they have chosen from the real world and explain how it is linked to the TOK world (a pivotal part of the assessment for the course).
Thank you in advance for your attendance and we very much look forward to seeing you at this event.

Year 4 Trip to Alexandria
The Year 4 trip to Alexandria was a great success. The year group visited a number of sites that related to their learning about the Roman Empire, including the amphitheatre and the Citadel, which was where the Alexandria lighthouse once stood. But Alexandria was not just about learning, we all had lots of fun together on the journey and at the hotel in Montaza Gardens.

Our BISC U10 and U12 boys' football teams recently took to the field for friendly matches against AIS.

Pupils learnt a new ‘Wake Up, Shake Up’ performed by the Dance ASA group. They also enjoyed a story about inclusion read by Ms McNamara, and a wonderful song. Foundation Stage One
It has been a very busy week in Foundation Stage 1 alongside all the regular activities. Rehearsals for the annual production are proceeding, the children are learning their lines, songs and dances. The tailors were in the School and the children were measured for their costumes.
For those of you following the progress of the FS1 garden, we now have six green tomatoes, which we are hoping will soon be ripe enough to eat.
Swimming lessons continue and we have been very fortunate with the weather this year - it has been perfect.
Foundation Stage Two
Children in Foundation Stage 2 have been applying their knowledge of phonics to write simple sentences. Pleasingly, the children are remembering to use finger spaces and full stops in their writing.
The children are also beginning to reflect on their time in the Foundation Stage. They are learning songs and poems to share in the upcoming FS2 Graduation Ceremony.
