Guest Speaker H.E. Mr Nabil Fahmy
It was a significant and special week at BISC, as we were delighted to welcome His Excellency Mr Nabil Fahmy, former Egyptian Foreign Minister, to address our students on the “History and Contemporary Aspects of the Palestinian Cause”.
Mr Fahmy has been at the centre of Egyptian diplomacy for several decades, having served as the Egyptian Ambassador in Tokyo (1997-1999), in Washington (1999-2008), and as Egypt’s Foreign Minister (2013-2014).
In his address, Mr Fahmy traced the history of this important issue and provided insight and analysis of the situation. Our students asked profound and intelligent questions and gained much needed time and space to reflect, learn and discuss an issue very much at the forefront of our thoughts.

In our next phase of improving standards, all students will be expected to wear the BISC blazer to School, every day, from the 8th of January 2024. Please can all parents ensure that students have this blazer ready for the new term.
As a reminder, the full BISC uniform, which is shared in the Parent Handbook, can be found below. In addition to the BISC jumper and blazer, students can also wear the gilet to keep warm. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Beyond COP21 Symposium
On Thursday last week, a group of Year 10 Geography students attended the Beyond COP21 Symposium at New Cairo British International School, along with several other schools from around the city. The event was a fantastic opportunity for students to discuss environmental responsibility and sustainability issues currently affecting Egypt, in collaboration with peers from across the community. The team of BISC students contributed to workshops throughout the day and returned to School with a renewed sense of motivation to enact positive change to our environment.
Year 11 Saturday Coursework Session
Last Saturday, over forty Year 11 students attended an additional support session given by the English department to help them improve their imaginative coursework. Students were incredibly engaged and produced great improvements in their work. They should be applauded for their commitment to their work.

Library News
The Senior School Library will be closed for essential maintenance work until after the winter holiday. However, a new pop-up library is available for students to use at break times for book borrowing, Accelerated Reader quizzes, and meeting up with friends to talk about books! This library can be found just along the English department corridor, next to S314.
It is very important that library books are returned as soon as they have been read so that we can maintain supply while the main library is closed. There is a box for returned books outside the main library, or books can be returned to the new library during break times.
Well done to everyone in Years 7 and 8 who passed their reading target last week. You can now take quizzes towards your next target, details of which will be given to students next week.

Congratulations to Abdelrahman in Year 9 who recently won the Pan Arab Championship in the Under 13s category, played in Saudi Arabia from 26th to 30th November. Competing against players from twelve Arab nations, his first place finish also made a big difference for his team, who won a Gold medal as well.

Key Stage 1 Production
The Theatre was at full capacity for the KS1 Production of ‘The Big Bad Grinch’. The audience was captivated, as they were transported through Fairyland with Santa and the Grinch in order to find the missing parts of his sleigh.
The children delighted us with their wonderful singing, dancing, acting and instrument playing. We were very proud of their achievements and would like to thank all staff members who were involved in preparing for this wonderful show. See more photos here, and a video replay of the production.
Year 6 Exit Point
The Year 6 Exit Point was a wonderful way for the pupils to bring their Term 1 ‘Ancient Greece’ topic to an exciting close and showcase the delightful work they have produced throughout the first term. The pupils were proud to share their understanding of the Ancient Greek civilisation, and how it impacted modern-day society. Not only were the Year 6 parents able to witness this amazing showcase, the rest of the Junior School also were able to view the great work produced by Year 6. Well done to the pupils and the Year 6 team. See more photos here.
After School Activities
Please note that Term 1 ASAs will end on Wednesday 13th December.
Thank you to all parents for entering in your choices for Term 2 ASAs. The portal has now closed to allow the School time to ensure that all allocations are correct, and we will confirm these activities with you before the end of Term 1. We will be updating our system to prioritise pupils who were on the waiting list for a specific activity, and to limit the number of pupils who have the same activity two terms in a row. The brochure is available here, if you would like to review the descriptions of each activity.
Assembly Leaders
Over the last few weeks, pupils across the Junior School submitted a video applying for an Assembly Leader role. Our Assembly Leaders were elected by our Pupil Council last Thursday. Many pupils submitted compelling and persuasive videos, which made the final decision a very tough one to make. Well done to everyone that took part and congratulations to the newly elected leaders. We look forward to seeing our leaders thrive in their new role.

Junior School Band
There was a tremendous atmosphere in the Theatre on Monday 4th December, as the Junior School band wowed us with a showcase of musical talent. This performance showcased a range of musical instruments which was lively and engaging throughout. It was clear that the pupils have made fantastic progress when playing their instruments this year, and both teachers and parents were very proud of their achievements. Thank you to all the parents who came to support this event. See more photos here.
Class 6M Art
Mrs Miah’s class used recycled materials in their Art class this week, creating 3D ancient Greek temples. Replicating ancient wonders of history fostered a new layer of understanding, authenticity and appreciation for the topic. This was showcased in the Year 6 Exit Point. See more photos here.
Class 5B Maths
Mr Belmar’s class is working on a Zoo Project, using their knowledge of area and perimeter, to create the blueprints for a zoo. This collaborative task demonstrated not only their new mathematical knowledge, but also their ability to work as part of a team. More photos here.
Year 3 Art
Year 3 pupils have been learning about ancient Egyptian pottery, studying their designs and uses. They are now using paper-mache to make their own pots. The children had great fun making a mess and learning a new art technique. Photos of class 3O and class 3M.
Year 4 French
During this Year 4 French class, pupils learnt the names of clothes in French. They worked independently to look for the meaning of the new words using their iPads, and then learnt to pronounce the new words with Mr Gresse. More photos here.
Year 6 Science
Mr Sagun brought his pupils out in the quad for experiments this week, testing their knowledge of Chemistry and Physics! More photos here.
Key Stage 1 Assembly
In last week’s assembly, pupils sang and performed with percussion instruments before the teachers handed the certificates for Stars and Mathematicians of the Week. More photos here.

Foundation Stage One
To mark the end of our Transportation topic, Foundation Stage 1 pupils channelled their creativity into crafting boats. The air buzzed with excitement as each class eagerly took part in a boat race. Congratulations to the winners: Hana H and Sherifa K from FS1B, Lara M from FS1Y and Ms Cashman’s boat in FS1C. The boat making activity not only sailed through the curriculum but left a wave of enthusiasm amongst our pupils.
Next week will mark the start of our “The Snowman” topic.
Foundation Stage Two
Foundation Stage 2 pupils are learning about belonging to a community. In the previous weeks, the pupils have explored the local area and this week we have started to learn about the wider world. Pupils have enjoyed taking part in airport roleplay, studying maps and discovering features of countries around the world. We have learnt to say hello in different languages and shared information about special places we have visited.
Keeping our students safe online is a priority at BISC. We are happy to share advice from the Safeguarding Training Centre, to enable parents to understand the pros and cons of various social media, games and digital trends.
This week we are sharing tips about screen time.
