Attendance Matters
As we approach the first of December, please can I remind all parents and students that attendance matters. There is a direct correlation between attendance and academic performance. Young people and children also benefit from the routines of School, and develop stronger, healthier bonds with their peers and teachers if they are in, consistently and regularly.
Requests for early release for longer family holidays will not be authorised by the School, unfortunately. We are bound to report unauthorised and attendance percentages on all future transcripts. This is standard practice and expectations of all schools, and all schools aim for excellence in attendance; this is not an unusual expectation.
Every lesson matters and every day counts - this was the aim we started the year with and I kindly request all parents to support this mission.
Year 8 English
Students in Ms Curran’s Year 8 English class conducted a forum based on 'animal abuse', with a special focus on the use of camels, horses and donkeys at the Giza Pyramids. Students had to use the persuasive writing techniques that they have been studying this term to influence the audience to accept their position on the topic. All students worked very hard preparing their presentations and did a great job outlining their opinions about the use of animals in the tourism industry. All of this wonderful work will help them complete their in-class examination on the same topic next week. See more photos.
Year 9 Geography
The Trading Game was a fun, engaging and valuable plenary lesson for the Year 9 Development unit, showcasing how the gap between rich and poor nations is maintained through unfair trade. The game simulates the world trading system and enables players to consider the role geography plays in explaining the unfairness of unequal trading and power relationships between countries. In teams, students represented countries of different levels of development and manufactured products (shapes) from raw materials (represented by paper), in exchange for US$, in order to advance their economies as fast as they could. However, countries had different starting positions and thus the challenge for the lower income countries to accrue wealth was far greater than those who were wealthier. The ability of each nation to negotiate deals, form trade blocs, exploit opportunities, deal with changing terms of trade and to work productively and efficiently determined their success on the global arena. The game provided a perfect conclusion to what has been a truly enjoyable unit. See more photos.
BSME Football Tournament
The BISC U16 boys and girls football teams had a great run at the BSME football tournament in Doha this week. Both teams showed tremendous spirit and skill throughout the competition. In the 3rd/4th place playoff, the boys battled hard but came up just short, finishing 4th overall.
The girls team also excelled, winning their group to advance to the knockout rounds, finishing 3rd place overall. It was a superb achievement for the whole team, and the players and coaches can be proud of how far they made it in the tournament and how they represented BISC with passion and pride.

Year 11 Guest Speaker
His Excellency Mr Nabil Fahmy, Former Egyptian Foreign Minister, will address Year 11 students on the “History and Contemporary Aspects of the Palestinian Cause”.
Based on an internal poll for Year 11 students who were asked to choose a topic they would want a guest speaker to talk about, a huge majority voted for addressing the ongoing situation in Palestine, shedding light on both historical and contemporary perspectives. To that end, on Monday 4th December, BISC will welcome H.E. Mr Nabil Fahmy, former Egyptian Foreign Minister. Foundation Stage One
This week has been very exciting in FS1. The pupils learnt about different forms of air transportation. They learnt about the science behind parachutes and then made their own using string and plastic bags. On Tuesday 28th November, Ms Cashman performed a very exciting parachute experiment, please see the below video. As the pupils seem engaged in this topic, we will continue learning about transportation. Next week, we will learn about different forms of sea transportation.
Foundation Stage Two
FS2 pupils are learning about 'People Who Help Us’ as part of our Communities topic. The pupils enjoyed an informative visit from the School doctor, Dr Manal, who explained the responsibilities of a doctor. The pupils also visited our onsite School ambulance to discover more about the role of a paramedic and explore inside an ambulance.
Keeping our students safe online is a priority at BISC. We are happy to share advice from the Safeguarding Training Centre, to enable parents to understand the pros and cons of various social media, games and digital trends.
This week we are sharing tips about YouTube.
