We would like to wish all members of the community a very enjoyable break - it has been well earned!
Our IB and GCSE students in Year 13 and Year 11 will start their official examinations straight after the break. These examinations represent a major milestone in their school lives and the school would like to congratulate them for their efforts so far and wish them well with their revision over the next few weeks; I am confident that they will achieve very good results.
Labor Day (1st May) has been confirmed as a public holiday in Egypt. As is customary, bank holidays that happen mid-week are observed on the following Thursday. It is therefore anticipated that Thursday 4th May will be a school holiday in lieu of Monday 1st May.

Term 2 Reading Successes!
It has been great to see an improvement in the attitude of Year 7 and Year 8 to reading in Term 2. So many of our students have been really dedicated to their reading and, collectively, Years 7 and 8 read over 22,000,000 words, which is an amazing achievement. A specific congratulations to Class 8A (Ms. Gaafar’s class) who set a BISC record, reading 4,825,248 words in a term!
We would also like to celebrate the students who have been incredibly successful in their reading, achieving three 100% quizzes over Term 2:
Year 7
- Ms. Taylor’s class: Hana and Ahmed
- Ms. Jenkinson’s class: Jessica
- Ms. Ellicot’s class: Lina, Zainab and Valentina
- Ms. Estebanez’s class: Johannes
Year 8:
- Ms. Gaafar’s class: Lilly, Yara, Farida, Farida, Noor and Carma
- Ms. Tweedley’s class: Nelly
The following students have exceeded all expectations and have completed more than three 100% quizzes over Term 2:
Year 7: Laila from Ms. Ellicot’s class who achieved five
Year 8: Adam from Ms. Gaafar’s class who achieved four, Mohamed from Ms. Taylor’s class who achieved four, Louis from Miss Quinn’s class who achieved four and Abdallah from Miss Quinn’s class who went above and beyond everyone and achieved eight 100% quizzes!
Our readers of the term are:
Year 8: Mohamed from Ms. Taylor’s class. He has really improved his commitment to reading this term, being a role model for everyone else in Year 8. Not only does he consistently get 100% on his quizzes, he selects books that challenge his intellect and expands his understanding of the world.
Year 13 Leavers Assembly
On Monday, the Year 13 students enjoyed their leavers' assembly, attended by all students and their teachers. It was an event that celebrated the idiosyncrasies of the students who will leave an indelible mark on BISC. Each of the students won an award to commemorate their contributions to the school and to lessons.
Some notable moments included a video created by the head students with photos of their time at BISC all the way from FS1 to Year 13. It was certainly eye-opening, as some of the teachers have only known them as the “big guys” rather than the mini ones that used to run around the school in the morning.
We would like to wish the students every success in the future and we are all looking forward to them officially graduating from BISC on June 9th!
Year 11 Assembly
Year 9 Computer Science
Year 9 students have been creating some fantastic apps using Java Script programming language. Students created a range of apps such as Tic Tac Toe, a general knowledge quiz, a memory game and a meal planner.
Here are some of the Year 9 students working on their computer programming with Mr Miah.
Year 7 Geography
Trinity Music Examinations
It is always a delight to celebrate students’ achievements and, this week, we have the pleasure of congratulating the high achieving musicians that have recently taken Trinity College London Music Examinations. The examinations start at Initial and go up to Grade 8. Noor, Mostafa, Lara, Taliya, Zeina, Ryan and Hassan all attained great marks in their exams on instruments such as bass guitar, piano, guitar and vocals. Well done to everyone and we look forward to your future achievements.
Careers Department
Year 13 students have received more university undergraduate offers in the last few days. Year 13 students will finalise the universities selection very soon and we will support them in the next steps of the process. From the 42 UCAS/UK universities applications, 27 students have received all decisions and 99% students have received conditional offers. One of the medicine applicants has an assessment and interview in the coming weeks. Well done to all the Year 13 students.
Another polite reminder to the Year 12 students to register for the IELTS academic paper-based test that is taking place on Saturday 6th May 2023 at BISC. Please use this weblink to register.
Year 10 Careers meetings finished today and we discussed academic targets and summer programme opportunities with students. We shared the following summer courses with the students during our conversations:
It is vital for Year 10 students to be engaged in some summer courses as it will help them to select IB Options next year. Good luck to Year 10 students with their end of year exams as these results are disclosed on the BISC official transcript.
A Year 7 and 8 Careers Assembly will take place on Monday 15th May 2023 during PSHE lesson in period 4. Parents and guardians are welcome to attend. A formal invitation will be sent by Mr Raza.

B: Solve the full cube
Competition Date: To be announced - but it will be towards the end of Term 3, so there is a great deal of time to practise! Below are links to You Tube videos that include hints on how to solve the cube.

Junior School STEM Week
The first week back after the Easter Holidays will be STEM week.
KS1 & KS2 Maths: During this week the children will work on a creative Maths enterprise where they will advertise and make a project on Sunday and Monday.
On Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd May, KS1 & KS2 will have a focus on the SCIENCE element of STEM.
The fun, engaging and informative activities in Science and Maths will evolve around the topic CONNECTIONS.
The children will learn about and discuss how connections are made between people, plants, animals, materials and other things in their everyday lives and will make connections within their class, the school and the wider community.
Key Stage 1 Science: the children will be carrying out the following activities over the course of the week:
- A Science Transportation competition. Build a transportation model using any material and bring it to school by Wednesday 3rd May. The children should hand it to their class teacher.
- Carry out a Science experiment at home and send a video to your teacher.
The 2 days of Science will involve:
- Science investigations being carried out in classes.
- A Science Magic Show and Workshop.
Key Stage 2 Science: the children will be carrying out the following activities:
- A Science Craft Competition. The children will have to create a poster about ‘connections‘ using 3D materials. Full details will be shared with your child on Google Classroom. The deadline for this is Monday 1st May.
- A range of Science experiments in their classes.
- A Science Magic Show and Workshop
All classes will be invited to Dress as a Scientist on Wednesday 3rd May. The children can come as a scientist, an invention, a Science process - anything science-related or related to the year’s theme CONNECTIONS.

Swimming will commence after the Easter Break, starting on Sunday 30th April. One of your child’s PE lessons each week will be a swimming lesson. Junior School Classes will swim on the following days:
Year 1: Sunday - all Year 1 classes will swim on Sunday afternoons, starting on the first day back after the holidays.
Classes 2M and 2C: Monday

- Pool shoes
- Goggles
- Swim hat (essential for pupils with long hair - boys or girls)
- Sun cream (although it is recommended to put cream on at home before school).
Please label ALL items of swimming equipment clearly with your child’s name and class. Swimsuits must be one piece, sporty style-swimsuits - no bikinis or extreme cut-out styles
Please note - there is not enough time or enough facilities to allow for luxurious showers after swimming. The children will just rinse off the chlorine, so please do not send shampoo and conditioner. If your child has a skin related issue, like eczema, send in a small travel shower gel, if you wish.
The children should come to school in their PE kit (shorts and t-shirt) on their PE and swimming days - to allow for easy changing (no wrestling with buttons or collared shirts or dresses).
Any questions - please email Ms Foley on Helen.Foley@bisc.edu.eg

The project will be divided into two parts. Firstly, each class from KS1 and KS2 will take and upload a range of photos of Cairo onto their Google Classroom. Secondly, the children will use their photos as the basis for their own original works of art. They will have the option to paint over their photos, or create a collage using different media (paint, oil pastels, add collage) in a different range of styles.

Keeping our students safe online is a priority at BISC. We are happy to share advice from the NOS (National Online Safety), to enable parents to understand the pros and cons of various social media, games and digital trends.
This week's advice is about Cross-platform Sharing.
If parents would like copies of any of the photos you have seen in the Bulletin, please email s706@bisc.edu.eg.
